Évora, a museum-city classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds many secrets and breathtaking views within its streets and hills. Whether you're visiting the capital of Alentejo or simply looking for a new spot to take in the scenery, discover the 5 best viewpoints in Évora.

1. Alto de São Bento Viewpoint

This is, without a doubt, the most impressive viewpoint in Évora. Located just a few kilometers from the historic center, Alto de São Bento offers a panoramic view over the entire city and the vast Alentejo plains. At sunset, the golden colors make this place absolutely magical. In addition, the hill is home to old windmills, which add extra charm to the scenery.

Tip: Bring a picnic or visit in the late afternoon for a truly memorable experience.

2. São Francisco Church Viewpoint

Lesser-known as a viewpoint but offering a surprising view, the top of the Church of São Francisco (famous for its Chapel of Bones) reveals the city's rooftops, with Évora’s cathedral standing out in the skyline. The blend of architecture and urban landscape makes this spot one of the most charming in the city.

3. Évora Cathedral Tower

Climbing the cathedral tower is almost a must-do ritual for anyone visiting the city. From the top, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the old town, the city walls, and the surrounding countryside. Although the staircase is narrow and demanding, the effort is well worth it for the unique perspective of medieval Évora.

Tip: Visit on clear days to see as far as the eye can reach.

4. Diana Garden Viewpoint

This viewpoint is located next to the famous Roman Temple and the Cadaval Palace. The view here is more understated, overlooking part of the lower town and more modern areas, but it scores points for its historical surroundings and proximity to other tourist attractions.

5. Viewpoint at Largo da Porta de Moura

Although less expansive than the others, this small viewpoint offers a pleasant view over part of the old town. The charm here lies more in the urban atmosphere and narrow streets than in a breathtaking landscape.

Verdict: Good for a quick photo, but not as impressive as the others.

Évora has much more to offer beyond its architectural beauty and historical heritage. These viewpoints are perfect spots to soak up the Alentejo spirit, whether at sunrise, sunset, or during a peaceful walk. If you have to choose just one, Alto de São Bento is the must-visit place — but each of them has something unique to offer.
